2. Walk Elephant. Walk Elephant is an initiative to improve walking routes across the Elephant & Castle area as part of the changes that are happening there. Southwark Council has been working with local groups to help identify places where improvements are needed to enable people to walk through the area more easily. As part of the public consultation about these ideas, a series of walks is being held to help people make suggestions about what needs to change and everyone is welcome to come on them.

The three walks still to come are:

1. Wednesday 10 May 5.30pm to 7.30pm. Walking through West Walworth. Meet at the entrance to Pasley Park on Manor Place at 5.30pm and wander through West Walworth to Hotel Elephant for refreshments at the end of the walk. One of the special features of this walk is Walworth Farm.

2. Wednesday 17 May 8am to 10am. Walking from Brook Drive to Bankside. Meet outside the Castle Leisure Centre at 8am and the walk ends at 10am at the Union Theatre Café in Bankside. Special features of this walk are Lamlash Street and the industrial heritage of Glasshill St.

3. Wednesday 24 May 5.30pm to 7.30pm. Walking from Bermondsey Street to Newington Causeway. Meet at Tanner Street Park on Bermondsey Street at 5.30pm and the walk ends at Mercato Metropolitano at 7.30pm. Special feature is Symington House garden.

5. Flint's Theatrical Chandlers, Queen's Row SE17

At our 11th May meeting we had an excellent presentation by Grit Eckert about Flint’s and its planned closure at the end of the year as the freeholder has chosen to turn it into residential accommodation through two planning applications that were decided late in 2016 (16/AP/3851 and 16/AP/3852). The details of the discussion we had about this in the meeting appear in the minutes and Grit’s presentation is below. If you would like to see inside the Grade 2 listed building do come to our June meeting which is being held there.

7. Link Age Southwark. Local charity supporting older people in Walworth

News from Link Age Southwark:

Link Age Southwark is a local charity supporting people aged 60+ in Southwark. The charity works to tackle loneliness and isolation, and supports older people to maintain active lives in the community. We recruit volunteer befrienders in Walworth to visit older people at home for an hour a week, for friendship and company. We also offer free activity groups for people aged 60+ locally - join us at King Charles Court (SE17 3NU) or D’Enysford House (SE5 7BB) for gentle exercise led by an experienced tutor. If you would like to volunteer to help at these groups – setting up chairs, serving refreshments – or could drive participants to the group, we’d love to hear from you.
To volunteer – call 020 8299 2623, or email volunteering@linkagesouthwark.org
To join our activities for Southwark residents aged 60+ - call 020 8299 2623 or email info@linkagesouthwark.org
