2. H1 Planning Committee – Tuesday 4th October.
At its Tuesday 4th October meeting, the Southwark Council planning committee unanimously rejected Lendlease’s H1 planning application for an office block at the north end of the Walworth Road, on the grounds that it was too big and would also have an adverse impact on daylight and sunlight.
There is a feature on the committee meeting from the SE1 Community Website at: https://www.london-se1.co.uk/news/view/10679
Noted were the more than 430 objections to the application. Leading up to the committee and at the committee last night there is a need to recognise the work and contributions of Jerry Flynn (35% Campaign), Harpreet Aujla (Southwark Law Centre), Steve Lancashire, Norma Lawrence and Marina Farfan.
The image of the proposed development below is taken from the SE1 article.

3. Walworth Heritage Action Zone (HAZ) Update (from September WS meeting)
Update from Ellie Cook the Southwark Council/Historic England HAZ officer on progress on the Walworth Road HAZ projects and in general on the HAZ:
- PSICA building grants – a grant has been agreed with the owner of the former Kennedy’s (305 Walworth Road) and the external works are due to start at the beginning of October. We expect them to be complete by the end of November and would encourage members to support this local business, Lao Dao restaurant, once it opens.
- PSICA grants – work by our heritage architects/consultants Purcell to prepare planning applications for the restoration of three properties in ‘The Promenade’ will begin in October, with a view to tendering the works in January 2023.
- Planning enforcement – enforcement colleagues and myself have engaged with the freeholder of the ‘South London Press’ building (282 Walworth Road).
- Planning enforcement – the representatives of the owner of the building above Lynne’s Electrical have recently responded to our communication about their unauthorised removal and rebuilding of the original decorative parapet and we are engaging with them on a resolution, ensuring accurate reinstatement.
- LSBU students are writing their theses on subjects relevant to Walworth and have been undertaking their primary research with help from the architects of the Walworth Town Hall restoration project and Diana Cochrane and other Walworth Society members. Local knowledge is invaluable and I would encourage people to engage with the students if/when they request information. We should end up with some very interesting research on the area when their work is complete in February 2023.
- Pullen’s Estate – Historic England are also looking at these buildings for possible inclusion in the statutory list, but their research is at a preliminary stage.
- Walworth Stories – Diana and Neil are doing sterling work on writing up their research and I believe will be giving the meeting a full update.
- Local List – this has now been published for consultation and I know Michael Tsoukaris will be giving you full information on how you can contribute.
