Walworth Society News – March 2023

The minutes of the 15th March meeting appear here

Minutes of our last meeting (February) here.

2. Walworth Road Post Office – Closure.

As you may know, the Walworth Road Post Office closed on 28th February owing to the sudden resignation of the franchisee. This has left 45,000 people in SE17 without a Post Office and a service that is vital for a huge number of people in our area.

Almost no information was provided at the time by the PO and people have been left completely in the lurch.

Our Councillors and Neil Coyle MP have had a pretty robust conversation with the PO and there is now a more official response from the PO about the closure:

Neil Coyle MP is planning to attend our WS meeting on 15th March to update us on the situation.

As and when we get any news we will always put it on our twitter account: https://twitter.com/WalworthSociety

Thanks to everyone who looked at or responded to our original tweet – that really helped get the PO’s attention that this was not something that they could overlook:

3. Community Assets in Walworth.

At our February meeting we heard from Matt Meynell from the Walworth Community Pub project who has been working to update the list of current and potential community assets in Walworth (building on the great work of the Walworth Neighbourhood Forum a few years ago).

He/we would be really to get some feedback on the list – additions, amendments and comments – so if there are any points that you would like to make about the list, please could you email them to Matt at walworthcommunitypub@gmail.com and he will include them on the updated list. See list below or click here. Thanks so much!

5. Just Space Coordinator Post

A message from Just Space: Just Space is seeking someone to act as Coordinator and communications leader on a self-employed, part-time, contractor basis.

Our outgoing Coordinator Richard Lee has been in the role since the organisation began 14 years ago. He is now moving aside to concentrate on various projects and we wish to find a new coordinator who can also take on some communications tasks, which Just Space wishes to develop. Richard has been central to the growth and success of the network and we are not expecting to match him exactly, so whoever we find in this search may be part of a new direction of travel, while continuing to support our network.

This opportunity is made possible by the award of a 2-year grant by Trust For London and the new contract could begin in April 2023. The contract would be subject to review and confirmation after 3 months and would end at the latest when the 2 year grant expires.

We rely on our members, supporters and friends to bring this opportunity to the attention of people who might do this work superbly, so please spread the word.

The application deadline is 12th March 2023 at 2300h. For more details or to apply click here or go to justspace.org.uk.
