2. Beehive PH planning application (23/AP/0481) – refusal.

Some good news. The planning application to redevelop the Beehive PH (23/AP/0481) as residential accommodation was refused by Southwark Council on 7th June. The Council has identified very strong grounds for refusal focusing on the loss of the pub as an asset of community value.

The officer’s report refers to the “vast number of objections have been raised which highlight the importance of the public house to the local community”. Thanks to everyone who objected. There was a total of 136 objections and many of those were from Walworth Society members; those objections have made a real difference to the outcome of this application.

The grounds for objection are shown below and the very detailed officer’s report can be seen in the documents of 23/AP/0481.

5. Kennington Noir Presents Touch Of Evil.

Touch of Evil (1958), Directed by Orson Welles, with Charlton Heston, Janet Leigh, Joseph Calleia, Akim Tamiroff and Marlene Dietrich. Wed 21 Jun 2023 at 19:30 ·

After many years away from Hollywood, Orson Welles was persuaded by Charlton Heston, who in turn had to persuade Universal, to direct this noir based on a contemporary novel Badge of Evil by Whit Masterson. The tagline for the film was “The Overwhelming Drama of a Strange Vengeance”.

Heston plays Miguel Vargas, a Mexican prosecutor newly married to Leigh. While crossing the Mexican border on their honeymoon, they witness a car bombing, which seems to be linked to the brother of the man Vargas is investigating. The local police chief, Hank Quinlan (Welles), set up a dupe as the murderer, much to Vargas’s disgust. He sends his bride to a hotel for her safety, but then she is kidnapped…
