3. Pullens Xmas Open Studios.

Pullens Yards Xmas Open Studios is being held this winter in the first week of December: Friday 1st to Sunday 3rd.

Pullens Yards were purpose-built for designer-makers in the late 1880s. The studios have housed craftspeople, working with their hands, for a hundred and twenty years.

Unsurprisingly, over this length of time, what most of the crafts-people produce has evolved: at one time the Yards boasted lace makers, fan makers and cabinet makers; who have been replaced by today’s filmmakers, jewellers and artist potters. A few crafts have stayed, furniture designers and letterpress printers are here now, just as in the days of Queen Victoria.

Come and visit the studios, buy your Xmas presents, and listen to the bands.  More information click here or go to Pullensyards.co.uk

4. Animated Tour – Walworth’s Diverse History – Sat 25th November

News from Kaleidoscope.

There is a FREE local diversity history tour on Sat 25th November, which animates some of the communities and people who have made the Walworth area and the Aylesbury Estate home. The event is brought to you by the Kaleidoscope Festival and is part of our community based projects which are highlighting local diversity through a range of performance, events and free tours.

The tour will see actors bring to life some of the local characters including Prince Monolulu who was a tipster on East Street market and the first Black man on the BBC in 1936. We will also highlight stories of locals who have shared their journeys and oral histories.

The tour runs from Walworth Square from 1pm and then brings us to Pembroke House where we have a sharing element inside with free food, African dance and music and stories from the Windrush. This project is also part of our wider celebrations for Black History Month.

You can book you free ticket at:

5. Cinema Museum: The Gothique Film Society Present.

Founded in 1966, the Gothique Film Society specialises in double bills ‘for the connoisseur of the macabre’.

For decades, Where Has Poor Mickey Gone? was among that very small group of legendary British horror films (think also Faces of Darkness and Whispers of Fear) that were long thought to be lost. Well, Faces and Whispers might still be missing, but Mickey surfaced in the late 90s, and we are delighted to present it on the ‘big screen’ for the first time in decades.

After being thrown out of a nightclub, three young rowdies, searching for more excitement, end up in a workshop belonging to magician Emilio Dinelli. After being man-handled and humiliated, the youths ask Dinelli to give them a show with his mysterious vanishing cabinet…

Warren Mitchell stars, while one of the youths is played by John Challis, who would go on to TV fame as ‘Boycie’ in Only Fools and Horses.

We are also delighted to give a rare ‘big screen’ outing for the equally legendary Spanish-language version of Universal’s Dracula.

In the very early days of sound films, with dubbing not yet available, the studios took to filming several versions of their films, in various languages, for overseas release. These are now especially fascinating as they were filmed at night, after the American cast and crew had left, on the same sets and with the same scenario – but adapted to ‘foreign’ sensibilities, so, as with Dracula, we have a fascinating comparison with the US version, which made a star out of Bela Lugosi.

In the Spanish version, he is replaced by Carlos Villarias as the Count, who brings his own interpretation, while the object of the Count’s desires, played by the rather insipid Helen Chandler in the US version, is here played by the much more desirable, and overtly sexy, Lupita Tovar, complete with low-cut, diaphanous nightgown.

Doors open at 18.00 for a 19.00 start. Refreshments will be available in the licensed cafe/bar.

Tickets and pricing: individual tickets at £8.00 can be purchased on the door or via TicketLab, click here. For more information click here or go to cinemamuseum.org.uk.
