Walworth History Through Song – FREE Event 6.30pm Sat 3rd May.

The next Walworth History Through Song event will be held at 6.30pm on Saturday 3rd May at St Paul’s Church, Lorrimore Square, SE17 3QU.

We tell stories from the history of West Walworth – the Newington ward area – and as always there will be songs that tell the story of the history of the area sung by local people as well as lots of historical background. The event is supported by the Southwark Council Neighbourhoods Fund.

The Walworth Society have uncovered songs associated with west Walworth including those:

  • Sung in 1854 in the original St Paul’s Church by the choir.
  • Written in the early 1600s by Thomas Middleton, including the Ambassador of the King of Persia which will be played by Olcay Demur.
  • Performed at the Royal Surrey Zoological Gardens with a short contemporary addition by children from St Paul’s Primary School.
  • Entertainment from the nearby Beehive Public House.
  • Events recorded in Manor Place including a piece played at the opening of Manor Place baths in 1898 and one to celebrate the boxing matches that happened there over a period of 75 years.
  • Recording the exploits of ‘The Forty Elephants’, an all-female, working-class crime gang from the area, known for their sophisticated shoplifting operations in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

And the audience will definitely be asked to sing-a-long, as we head to the Music Hall to eat boiled beef and carrots!

Tyrone Landau, pianist, will accompany Olivia Penhallow from People’s Company, Matt Meynell of the Walworth Community Pub Project and performer Rawlene Evelyn. Walworth Society researchers, Diana Cochrane and Neil Crossfield, will provide the historical context and images as part of the Walworth Untold Stories Project with drama added by Tyrone on the piano.

Come early for a free cuppa. Doors open 5.45pm. We will be finished before 8.00pm.

Everyone is VERY welcome.
