2. Southwark Council Neighbourhood Grants – deadline extended to 26th October.

News from Southwark Council
 
The Cleaner Greener Safer programme (and Devolved Highways Budget) is now part of the new ‘Neighbourhood Grants’ funding.
 
More information on how to apply can be found on our new webpage www.southwark.gov.uk/neighbourhood-grants.
 
The deadline for applications has been extended to 11.59pm on Sunday 26 October 2025.
 
If you applied for CGS or DHB funding last year, please check you profile on the Benefactor Cloud portal to make sure your details are up to date before submitting an application this year.
 
Please also note that any further updates about applications to Neighbourhood Grants 2026/27 will be sent from NeighbourhoodGrants@southwark.gov.uk. If you have any questions about the application process please email NeighbourhoodGrants@southwark.gov.uk.
 


 
3. Inspiral London – three unique walking events

News from Inspiral London of upcoming walking events.
  Sanctuary and Sustenance offers three unique walking events celebrating the rich contributions of migrant communities within Southwark. These unique walks are supported by Southwark Council’s Culture Together Fund and are launched at the end of October. All walks are free for Southwark Residents but non-residents welcome.   “Small Traces” meet at 11 am on Sat 25 October at London Bridge BOOK HERE Join InspiralLondon and Dancer Ranjini Nair, for Small Traces, a walk that interrogates micro-connections that tell of the colonial history between Britain and South Asia as we pay attention to place names, ghost signs and historical figures that populated Southwark, starting from London Bridge and weaving a way to Elephant & Castle. On the way we’ll follow the traces of the first Indian temple dancers brought to London, who stepped off their boat at London Bridge. 



4. Friends of Burgess Park AGM – Tuesday 28th October 2025 from 6pm.

Come to the Friends of Burgess Park AGM! 
Tuesday 28 October 6.30pm. Refreshments from 6.00pm 
Hear from our guest speakers Dominic Leary new Parks Officer and Ciaran Hawkins the new Head Gardener. Both joined Burgess Park in 2025. They will update on new park projects for 2026 and answer your questions.  
 
AGM – FOBP committee election – We need new committee members  – Support your local park, it is an important inner city green space, vital for local people and nature. 
 
As a committee member you will help to run the organisation; our aims are to protect, promote and enhance Burgess Park. We do this by speaking-up on behalf of the park, promoting the wildlife and nature, and organising practical park based activities.  
 
Projects to get involved in:  Developing a biodiversity plan for Burgess Park  Organising quarterly walk abouts with the Parks team  Helping to run community litterpics   Opportunities for nature volunteering and using plants in crafts sessions    Woodlands activity with LWT   Parks projects including Chumleigh Gardens pond mosaic    
Everyone is more than welcome! FOBP is a community group open to park users, local residents, volunteers, local groups and reps from TRAs and other organisations with an interest in Burgess Park. Please come along! 
Join us at 1st Place nursery, Chumleigh Gardens on Tuesday 28 October 2025 from 6pm for a 6:30pm start until 8:30pm.

5. The Elephant Stories-Creative Storytelling Workshop at LCC (London College of Communications) – Thursday 16 October, 3-5pm.

News from Elephant and Castle town centre team

Everyone from the Elephant & Castle and Walworth community is invited. Thiis is a chance to share your personal stories and memories of the area and celebrate what Elephant & Castle means to you.  The workshop will be run by LCC artists, giving you the opportunity to learn simple animation techniques and how to tell stories through pictures and sound while sharing stories from the community.

This workshop launches Elephant Stories, a project by LCC and Get Living, which will collect and share the voices and experiences of local people.

The Crocodile on the bus and other stories- capturing memories before the elephant forgets on Saturday November 1st at 2.30pm at Siobhan Davies Studio.
 
Have you ever wondered what The Elephant and Castle was like in the 1920s, 30s, 40s, 50s?  Did you enjoy our previous film, The Old Cow in the Kitchen? Then come along to a screening of The Crocodile on the Bus and hear more accounts of growing up and living in our ever changing area.

Join us for an afternoon of sharing of memories with the odd poem and song or two on Saturday November 1st at 2.30pm in Siobhan Davies Studios, 85 St George’s Road, SE1 6ER

2. M&S and Everyman Cinema among rumoured new openings in Elephant and Castle town centre. The £1.5 billion town centre is due to open early next year  (Southwark News Premium content).
