3. Peter Wright

It is with great sadness that we have to let you know of the death of Peter Wright. Peter was involved in a whole host of community activities across our area and in London. He was variously Chair of BATRA (Bricklayers Arms Tenants and Residents Association), helped lead the BATRA gardening club, Chair of Southwark Living Streets, the mover behind the Salisbury Row Streets for People project at the Bricklayers Arms, the author of the East Walworth Green Links project that links up green spaces between the Elephant & Castle and Burgess Park, a keen community gardener and supporter of the People’s Company and the person who made many of our indoor and outdoor activities across Walworth happen.

Peter was an amazing and tireless campaigner for a greener Walworth where people were at the centre of our streets and parks. He was a fabulous leader of campaigns such as the one to save Salisbury Row Park when it was under threat of development but was also incredibly practical, designing and building sets for plays and making go-karts for children to play with while working with London Play. His background as a teacher was invaluable and he brought a love of learning, practical skills and the outdoors to a huge number of young people including children from Robert Browning Primary School with whom he did gardening projects in Nursery Row Park.

We will miss Peter enormously but all that he achieved lives on around us from East Walworth Green Link walking route to trees and community planting projects all over Walworth.

Peter’s partner Lorraine and the many groups and individuals that he was involved with are inviting everyone to a celebration of Peter’s life on Sunday 10th September. The morning will start with a gardening and planting session in East Walworth and then at 2.30pm we will gather in the Huntsman & Hounds PH in Elsted St for a celebration of his life. All are welcome and more details will follow in the coming weeks.

A Tribute Page to Peter has been started at: https://petewright.muchloved.com

Please do have a look at it and contribute to it if you would like.

4. Lendlease H1 Office Block Planning Application – CrowdJustice Appeal

A message from the community objectors fighting the Lendlease application for the huge H1 office block at the junction of the Walworth Road with Elephant Road:

“Last year local residents and campaigners joined together to defeat Lendlease’s proposals to build an office block on Elephant Park. The application was rejected unanimously by the Southwark Council Planning Committee. Lendlease are now trying to overturn that decision at a public inquiry. We want to be there to stop them, but need to raise £15,000 for legal representation, for the best chance of success.”

“Our CrowdJustice appeal is now live and accepting donations!  Can you help us reach our £5,000 target and stop Lendlease’s plans to build an office block, not homes on Elephant Park? Click here to make a donation now! Please share the link:

https://www.crowdjustice.com/case/no-to-the-elephant-h1-office-b/

with your friends and contacts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and social media. Click the “Share on Facebook” button on the pledge page so your donation can inspire others!”

Please note that after only a few days the appeal has reached £3,650 of the £5,000 target, so with a little more help, the target is within reach.

  1. I may have missed it in the last meetings minutes but has anything been done to address the former Robert peel pub? I’ve seen it’s been gutted recently and now covered in scaffolding. Is there plans for it to reopen as a public house?

    1. Thanks for getting in touch about this. We had not seen any planning application about these works/changes to the Robert Peel PH so have passed this on to Southwark Council’s planning enforcement team who have said that they would look into it. Will keep you posted.
