3. Proposed McDonalds 284-286 W Rd – Planning committee 7pm Weds 7th October at Tooley St.

We are very disappointed to let you know that in spite of 55 well argued objections to planning application 26/AP/1110, planning officers have recommended to the planning committee that the opening hours for the proposed McDonalds at 284-286 Walworth Road should be extend from the currently permitted 8am to 8pm to 6am to midnight. If granted, this has the potential to cause a huge amount of disturbance late into the evening for residents in nearby and surrounding streets.

Along with other local residents, the society will be attending the planning committee meeting that will decide this application to try to persuade councillors not to grant this application. If you have the time, please do come along to show the strength of feeling against these proposals. The meeting details are:

Planning Committee (Smaller Applications) – Wednesday 7 October 2026 7.00 pm

4. The Tankard PH Walworth Road

You may have seen that the Tankard has a new look both inside and out and the new owners have told us a little about the work that they have been doing and their plans for the pub.

A New Chapter for The Tankard

The Tankard has been part of Walworth Road for generations, with records of a pub at 178 Walworth Road dating back to at least 1869. More than 150 years later, we are very proud to be giving this much-loved local pub a new chapter.

Over recent months we have been working hard to refresh The Tankard inside and out, while being careful to retain the character and atmosphere of a proper London pub. There is a fresh feel at The Tankard now — a brighter, more welcoming environment, but one that remains very much a local pub at heart.

Our aim is simple: to create a welcoming, well-run local where people from across Walworth can meet, enjoy a drink, spend time with friends and enjoy a programme of live events and entertainment.

There is still more to come. We are developing a programme of food, events and community initiatives over the coming months, while continuing to improve the pub itself.

Most importantly, we want The Tankard to remain what it has been for generations — part of the life of Walworth Road, but with fresh energy for the years ahead.

We look forward to welcoming you in.
