1. Walworth Society General Meeting – Wednesday 20th March 7pm (online).

Our next general WS meeting will be held on Wednesday 20th March starting at 7pm. Online (Zoom) only.  

The meeting will focus on the proposed closure of the M&S branch on the Walworth Road and we will be joined by our MP Neil Coyle.

2. Beehive PH Planning Appeal.

Many thanks to everyone who has put in comments to the Beehive PH planning appeal. We have heard from lots of members who have written to the Planning Inspector.

Representations can be made up until 28th March so if you would like to comment, there is still time. Our guide to the things that people might like to say is here:

3. Latin Age Classes. 

Latin Age is providing light exercise and socials and ESOL classes for Southwark older people from Latin American communities, on Wednesdays at its new base, Mercato Metropolitano, Elephant & Castle. For further details please email: latinageuk@gmail.com.
 

4.Pullens Film Location And History Event.

Pullens Film Location and History Event: 2pm to 8pm on Saturday 23 March 2024.

The historic Pullens Estate in South East London has been used as a location in various feature films as well as numerous independent film projects. Join us on free walking tour around the estate that offers a unique combination of fiction, fact and memory. We will visit some of the film locations, discover some of the history of the buildings and hear anecdotes from some of the residents.



This will be followed by a commemorative activity in Pullens Gardens where we will celebrate the efforts of the people who helped to save what remains of the estate from demolition in the mid 1980s and the counter culture that grew out of that, some which remains to this day.

We will be screening two films, the Clapham Film Unit short film, Pullenites and the multi award winning feature film The King’s Speech.

Timetable

  • 14:00 – Walking tour. Assemble at Newington News (10 Canterbury Place, London SE17 3AG)
  • 16:00 – Creation of a community mandala in Pullens Gardens
  • 17:00 – Refreshments at the Pullens Centre (184 Crampton Street, SE17 3AE)
  • 17:30 – Screening of The Pullenites (2018)
  • 18:00 – Screening of The King’s Speech (2010)
  • This event is totally FREE to anyone who would like to attend

5. Cinema Museum: Kennington Bioscope Present The Argyle Case.

The Argyle Case (USA 1917). Produced by and starring Robert Warwick. Directed by Ralph Ince. Also starring Charles Hines, Frank McGlynn Sr., Arthur Albertson and Elaine Hammerstein.



When multi-millionaire banker John Argyle is found brutally murdered in his home, suspicions are cast upon Mary Mazuret, his adopted daughter who became the sole beneficiary of his estate under his will, Argyle having quarrelled with his son Bruce. Just as the case begins to look black for Mary, Asche Kayton, a great private detective, is called in by Bruce and takes hold of the investigation.

Live piano accompaniment. Ashley Valentine will be playing for The Argyle Case and Timothy Ramsey playing for the first half of the programme. Silent film with intertitles which may be suitable for the deaf and hard of hearing.
