| Apologies but we have heard that Miatta Fahnbulleh MP will not now be able to attend tomorrow evening’s Walworth Society meeting owing to the need to be present in the House of Commons for votes during the evening. Her office apologises and very much hopes that Ms Fahnbulleh will be able to attend our July 15th meeting instead. Apologies again. Below is our revised agenda for the meeting plus a little feature about the former Walworth Road Railway station. |
| 1. Walworth Society June meeting – 7pm Weds 17th June (in person only) Our next general WS meeting will be held at 7pm on Wednesday 17th June at the Crypt, St Peter’s Church Liverpool Grove, SE17 2HH. We apologise that there is no online link and that the meeting will be in person only. Our agenda for the meeting is: 1. Welcome, apologies and introductions. 2. Action points from our May 2026 meeting and matters arising. 3. Harry Townsend Inspiring Elephant project – update Lynda Waterhouse. 4. Planning matters inc. proposed McDonalds. 5. Other issues. 6. AOB and date of next meeting (Weds 15th July). To download the minutes of the May meeting, click here 2. Walworth Road Railway Station If you find yourself near Fielding Street in West Walworth at the minute, there is a temporary opportunity to see more of the site of the former Walworth Road Railway Station (which closed in 1916 as part of savings during the First World war – Camberwell Station closed on the same day). ArchCo are refurbishing a couple of the arches on Empress St and you can see a number of interesting things including how the railway lines widen at the station to accommodate the “island” platform that used to be there and you can see all the way through the double arches at that part of the line. Many thanks to Luke M who first spotted these works. Below are some pictures of how things are currently and there is a great description of the former station (with maps) in this link: http://www.disused-stations.org.uk/w/walworth_road/ Do look at the photos at the bottom of the webpage. Some are of exactly the location we are looking at here. NB many of the street names have changed; so on the disused stations website, Beresford Road is now John Ruskin St and Olney St is now Fielding St. Hope of interest. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
